Album Review - The 11th Hour by The Birthday Suit

Fans of Idlewild fear not - the project of guitarist Rod Jones known as The Birthday Suit doesn't stray far from its roots. For anyone into the alt-rock stylings that he's known for, you won't be disappointed. For anyone not familiar with him, let me take you on a journey...

Opener ‘Do You Ever?’ provides a great introduction to the record, with thick, fuzzy guitars paired together with layers of Jones' vocals to provide a sleazy, sexy little number - enticing the listener to stick around, and have a few drinks.

Stand out track ‘On My Own’ is an atmospheric beauty where we feel the pain and suffering of Jones through the lyrics and effective instrumentation. It's pure emotion and bare anger and shows real progression in his songwriting away from the constraints of Idlewild.

Other tracks provide a good contrast of colours - acoustic guitar with strings on ‘They Say I Love You’ and piano and female vocals on ‘Talking Over You’.

Overall it's a very balanced and well-judged selection.

9/10
